On February 13, 2020 the FDA has issued a Drug Safety Communication in regards to the weight loss drug "BELVIQ". The FDA has requested that BELVIQ be removed from the market and not prescribed and/or sold. Also, if you already have BELVIQ as prescribed by your doctor the FDA has requested that you immediately discontinue using BELVIQ.

According to the FDA and results from clinical trials, BELVIQ has potential risks of various cancers including pancreatic, colorectal, lung, breast, brain and possibly other types of cancer.

The generic name for BELVIQ is Lorcaserin and became available in June of 2012.

BELVIQ XR ( Extended Release ) generic name is Lorcaserin HCI and it became available in July of 2016.

Both of these drugs have been recalled on February of 2020. Both have health concerns and the FDA has ordered both be removed from the market and all patients to immediately stop using these drugs.
